Several weeks after being recognized as 2012 Washington State Teacher of the Year, the Seattle Times published an op/ed in which I attempted to explain to a non-educational audience what it is that teacher librarians do and why it is important. Obviously, there are many things that teacher librarians do that contribute not only to student success but our society. Considering the discordant state of social and political discourse, I suggest that in their teaching, teacher librarians help fight Colbertian 'truthiness,' thereby offering a possible way forward toward a more enlightened, intelligent and well-considered future.
